PURPOSE OF THE VOLUNTEER POSITION
The Citizens On Patrol Program Members are the eyes and ears for the RCMP. By patrolling our Community, people become aware of our presence and are less likely to do bad things. Crime rates have decreased since the formation of our C.O.P.P team. We are proud of our Community and want to help make it safer for our residents.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Typically, patrols are at night, as this is when illegal activities usually occur. Our members observe and take notes only. Our members do not engage in any suspicious activities. Notes are taken for things that look out of place or suspicious people and/or vehicles, and a phone call to 911 is made when there is an Emergency or Crime in Progress. We do not want members putting themselves in an unsafe situation.
Patrols generally start at 9:00 p.m. and last for as many hours as possible. Some members patrol from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m., while others may patrol from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m. Patrols are done in your vehicle. We also do encourage walking patrols which are done during the day. We currently have two members at the Farmers Market on Saturdays.
This position is required as needed, typically two times per month. With more Volunteers, we would like to reduce the schedule to once per month while still providing Patrol Coverage to the Community.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND AGE REQUIREMENTS
A Criminal Background Check is required; the cost is covered by Citizens On Patrol and is confidential. A vehicle and a valid driver’s license are required unless you are doing walking patrols only. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Members on patrol should have a cell phone to contact RCMP when needed and bring along note-taking instruments.
TRAINING AND TOOLS PROVIDED
Our Trainer provides training. This can be done out on patrol with the trainer if Health Restrictions allow. Training can also be done in a short one-hour session in a classroom environment.
