Mentors with New Friends Mentorship Program

PURPOSE OF THE VOLUNTEER POSITION

Mentorship is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to have a positive impact on the world.

Children and youth who are involved in mentorship have a trusted adult to provide them with friendship, guidance, fun and new experiences. Children involved in mentorship have a higher sense of self-esteem, better school attendance, higher grades and a greater sense of hope for the future. Mentoring also has reciprocal benefits for Mentors too. People sharing knowledge and skills and spending time with mentees report a higher sense of satisfaction with life, better mental and emotional health, and a sense of contributing to the greater good of the world. Mentoring a young person in our community is a gift of hope, skills and friendship sustained over a lifetime.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE POSITION

Mentors will be responsible for contacting their mentee and spending time with them once a week for a minimum of two hours. Mentors can spend time with mentees in casual and organized activities. Bowling, puzzles, fishing, sledding, and other activities that cost little or no money are generally the focus of mentorship sessions. The mentor will likely need to be able to drive unless otherwise arranged, and have a driving record in good standing.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND AGE REQUIREMENTS

There are no special skills or qualifications for Mentorship! Being a good listener, having a sense of humour, and having an interest in spending time with a child or youth is all that is required. Mentors need to be over the age of 18. We encourage adults of all ages to volunteer! Seniors, especially, have so much to offer.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Mentors will be required to submit criminal and child abuse registry checks.

TRAINING AND TOOLS PROVIDED

Mentors will receive a half-day training session sharing information about mentoring children and youth on October 2. Further information sessions will follow. Mental Health First Aid Training will be made available to mentors to help support the work they do with mentees.
